National Autism Day Spotlight: Ciaran’s Journey

Ciaran’s journey is a brilliant reminder of what autistic young people can achieve when they’re understood, supported, and given opportunities that build on their strengths.

When Ciaran first came to the Youth Hub, he was looking for support with his CV and some guidance about what came next. Like many autistic young people, he faced challenges around new environments and changes to routine, but it was immediately clear he had huge potential. He was motivated, determined, and eager to move into paid employment.

Working closely with Ciaran, our Youth Hub Coordinator Katie began by strengthening his CV and cover letter, while also sharing volunteering and training opportunities linked to his passion for football. Ciaran approached each step with an open mind, which enabled Katie to refer him to the Prince’s Trust Get into Boxing programme. This gave him the chance to socialise with peers, build transferable skills, and grow more confident in unfamiliar settings.

With his confidence growing, Ciaran progressed onto the King's Trust 12-week Team programme, a free personal development course designed to build communication, teamwork, and practical skills through community projects and outdoor challenges. Alongside this, he continued volunteering as a Steward at Plymouth Argyle Football Club, where his dedication, reliability, and work ethic quickly shone through.

It wasn’t long before all his hard work paid off. Ciaran was offered a paid Bank Staff position with the Argyle Community Trust - a huge and well-deserved milestone. Katie continued to support him throughout his onboarding and helped him access further workplace support through Access to Work.

Ciaran isn’t stopping there. He’s preparing to start a maths course in September and is already exploring further training opportunities to continue building his skills and prospects.

His journey shows the real impact autism-aware support can have when young people are given consistent guidance, the right environment to thrive, and opportunities that grow with them. Most importantly, it highlights Ciaran’s own resilience, commitment, and the incredible potential he’s shown from day one.

We’re incredibly proud of everything he’s achieved and we can’t wait to see what comes next.

Thank you for sharing Ciaran’s story — it’s really powerful to read about such a personal journey on National Autism Day. Posts like this help bring real faces and real experiences to discussions that too often stay abstract. When someone talks about the daily challenges, the small victories, and the way support systems can make a difference, it resonates on a much deeper level.

I also appreciate how stories like this encourage people to look beyond labels and statistics. Understanding neurodiversity through individual perspectives helps build empathy and shows how meaningful inclusion and understanding can be in education, work, and social life.

On a lighter note, I was browsing through various community forums and resources while researching similar topics recently,…
