Joining forces to retain military service leavers in Plymouth

Last Thursday, representatives from Plymouth City Council’s HROD and Skills teams attended the South West Peninsula Employment Fair in Saltash to engage with local military service leavers. The event, hosted by the Career Transition Partnership (CTP), was an opportunity for these highly trained, well-motivated individuals with skills and qualities that meet a number of recruitment needs to connect with employers and prepare for future careers outside of the services.

Attending on behalf of the Council’s HROD team, Martin Edwardes said: “It was really good to see so many service leavers interested in the range of roles on offer through Plymouth City Council. So many were unaware of the number of services that we offer to the people of Plymouth and the opportunities that brings and it was great to join forces (see what we did there!) with Skills Launchpad Plymouth for CTPs ‘first’ yes ‘first’ event of its type in Plymouth!

“As a service leaver myself, it was good to hear about what future leavers are entitled to to help them on their next journey in the job market. All of the people I spoke to were pleasantly surprised to hear what transferable skills they would be able to offer in the variety of roles that we have. Definitely an air of de-mystifying what PCC are here for.”

Joining Martin, was Skills Lead Emma Hewitt, and Skills Launchpad Manager Jo Lacy, who see the military community, and the council’s continued collaborations with organisations including CTP, the Forces Employment Charity, and Armed Forces Covenant as a solution to tackling some of the city’s significant recruitment challenges.

Emma said: “Last year we hosted a localised Military Employment Showcase to help evidence the need of these events in the city, with a specific focus on supporting service leavers and their families’ to access job vacancies and career opportunities in the city. We recognise that connecting in person with local recruiting employers is vital as they start to plan for careers after serving, and to this end we have been delighted to host our first behind-the-scenes look at careers in construction this week at Babcock. Taking ten transitioning military personnel behind the wall, received fantastic feedback from all involved. This is all part of our action plan under the new theme group focused on Future Careers and Employers which I’m mandated to take forward on behalf of the new Armed Forces Covenant Leadership Group, exciting times.”

Plymouth City Council is recognised by the Armed Forces Covenant as a gold defence employer and is committed to actively recruiting and promoting local job and career opportunities to the Armed Forces community.
