Plymouth’s visitor economy continues to play a vital role in the city’s growth, generating over £300 million each year. As Britain’s Ocean City, Plymouth enjoys an international reputation for its rich heritage, dynamic culture and stunning waterfront—a destination that attracts visitors from across the globe. With an ambition to strengthen this success even further, the city is working towards a 15% rise in visitor numbers and a 30% boost in visitor spend by 2030, helping to create 1,000 new tourism jobs along the way.
To mark English Tourism Week (Friday 13 – Friday 22 March), Welcoming Plymouth is delivering an exciting programme designed to showcase the sector and inspire the next generation of tourism professionals. Throughout the week, job seekers, students and career changers will have the chance to step behind the scenes at some of Plymouth’s best‑known hotels, attractions and hospitality venues.
This year’s line‑up features an impressive range of partners, including popular accommodation providers such as Moxy Plymouth, as well as much‑loved local attractions such as Dartmoor Zoo and The Box. Participants can also take exclusive tours of Bistrot Pierre and the world‑famous Plymouth Gin Distillery, one of the city’s most iconic historic buildings.
Rhianne Greaves, our Visitor Economy Coordinator, said: “We are beyond excited to be able to host this English Tourism Week programme! Providing free behind-the-scenes access to some of the city’s key tourism businesses, as well as the opportunity to find out more about the range of careers available in the sector, is a fantastic opportunity for job seekers, career changers, military service leavers and university students alike. The Visitor Economy is key for Plymouth and this programme is the perfect chance to find out not only how our favourite tourism and leisure businesses run, but also to find out how to develop a career in the industry too.”
English Tourism Week offers a unique opportunity to understand how these businesses contribute to Plymouth’s thriving visitor economy, and to explore the diverse career pathways the sector offers—from front‑of‑house roles and animal care to events, hospitality, heritage, retail, and visitor experience.
