On Monday, 1 December, the Plymouth Armed Forces Covenant Theme Group: Future Careers and Employers convened a key partner meeting at the Council House, celebrating the first 12 months of collaborative work and sharing the significant impacts achieved together.
The city of Plymouth remains deeply committed to supporting its local armed forces community. Over the past year, partners have worked collectively to create new opportunities for service leavers, veterans and their families to explore civilian careers. Initiatives have included dedicated CV and LinkedIn workshops, industry insight days, and drop-in sessions at Skills Launchpad Plymouth, all aimed at easing the transition from military to civilian employment.
Jamie Portt, Hub Manager at Babcock International Group, highlighted the positive outcomes of the theme group’s efforts, noting that meaningful roles have been secured through personalised 1:1 support and a humanistic approach. Adding a personal perspective, Aaron Wilding, Human Factors Engineer at Babcock International Group, shared his inspiring journey from military service to civilian employment, praising the benefits of the group’s work and the support provided by Skills Launchpad Plymouth.
A key announcement during the meeting was the launch of “Passport to Plymouth’s Employment and Health”, a new resource designed in response to feedback from the armed forces community. This tool aims to guide individuals through local opportunities and support their transition into civilian life. In addition, the group unveiled its upcoming Mental Health Crib Sheet, created for employers to better support colleagues and promote retention in the workplace.
The event underscored the importance of collaboration, demonstrating how working together can unlock more opportunities for Plymouth’s armed forces community and strengthen the city’s commitment to those who have served.
