Congratulations to Sean Richards for being Highly Commended for the Construction Technical Apprentice of the Year 2026.
Sean is currently completing a degree-level apprenticeship in Building Services Design Engineering with Hoare Lea and UWE Bristol, which he began in September 2019. Throughout his apprenticeship, he has consistently performed far beyond the level expected, demonstrating technical strength, professionalism, and leadership well beyond his years.
Upon receiving the award, Sean said: “I want to give a big thank you to Building Plymouth for Highly Commending me for the Construction Technical Apprentice of the Year 2026 Award. I’m truly grateful, and I’m excited for what comes next. Onwards and upwards from here.”
One of his standout achievements has been taking on the role of mechanical design lead for two major education projects: the redevelopment of Cornwall College St Austell and the construction of the new Perranporth School. Both schemes were complex, high-profile builds requiring coordinated engineering solutions and regular engagement with multiple stakeholders. Sean took ownership of the mechanical design process from concept through detailed design, ensuring alignment with client requirements, sustainability goals, and Building Regulations. His work earned excellent feedback from both the Architect and the Client/Contractor team, AHR.
Sean also played an important role in the Royal Liverpool Hospital project, contributing to the redesign and coordination of MEP services around additional structural beams essential for the building’s integrity. This required close collaboration with the Manchester office and hands on involvement through site visits and walkarounds with contractor Laing O’Rourke to confirm design feasibility and resolve constraints.
Across all these projects, Sean has excelled in multidisciplinary collaboration. He became a reliable point of contact for architects, structural engineers, cost consultants, and contractors—communicating complex technical issues clearly and providing well-reasoned engineering guidance that supported smooth project progression. His proactive approach, ability to spot emerging issues, and willingness to take responsibility have significantly strengthened project outcomes.
Sean is known for his curiosity, analytical thinking, and commitment to continuous improvement. He brings a positive, solutions driven attitude to every task and combines technical skill with strong emotional intelligence. He approaches design challenges methodically, demonstrates excellent judgement, and confidently utilises engineering tools beyond what would typically be expected at apprentice level.
He has grown considerably in confidence, particularly in client facing situations. Sean has become increasingly comfortable explaining design decisions, addressing technical queries, and maintaining a calm, professional presence—even when challenged by contractors or senior client representatives.
His academic success further reflects his dedication to the profession. Achieving a 2:1 BEng (Hons) and progressing toward Incorporated Engineer (IEng) registration demonstrates his ambition and long-term commitment to the engineering discipline. He actively seeks feedback, embraces new challenges, and builds his understanding of both building services and the wider construction environment.
Although Sean has not directly taken part in BPART, he has been an engaged representative for Hoare Lea at numerous industry and community events. This includes supporting Building Plymouth’s Mission Mammoth volunteer project and attending several school careers fairs—such as Hele’s School and Devonport High School for Boys—where he has helped raise awareness of engineering careers and encouraged young people into the industry. His involvement showcases his strong sense of social value and commitment to supporting the next generation.
Sean embodies the very best qualities of an apprentice in the construction and built environment sector. His journey from apprentice to a highly capable Mechanical Building Services Engineer is a testament to his hard work, determination, and passion for his field. His professional maturity, initiative, and consistently high standards make it clear why he has been Highly Commended for this award.
