Building Plymouth connects residents with employers at construction careers drop ins

Building Plymouth recently delivered a series of three construction careers drop‑in sessions at Skills Launchpad Plymouth, creating a valuable space for local employers, training providers and residents to connect. Designed to inspire and support people at every stage of their employment journey, the sessions offered direct access to industry insights, training pathways and real job opportunities.

This month’s events were supported by Focus Training, JEM Scaffolding and Devon Contractors, each providing attendees with practical information about working in the sector. From understanding site expectations and training requirements to exploring live vacancies and funded development opportunities, visitors were able to gain an authentic insight into what a career in construction can offer.

The drop‑ins welcomed individuals with a wide range of experience—from those with no previous construction background to people already holding CSCS cards and considering their next career step. Employers were on hand to answer questions about entry‑level roles, workplace culture, career progression routes and the skills currently in demand. Training providers also offered guidance on funded skills bootcamps in areas such as electrical installation, plumbing and retrofit programmes that continue to open doors for people seeking a practical route into the industry.

The impact of the drop‑ins has been significant. Many participants left with a clear sense of direction, whether through referrals into training, introductions to employers or follow‑up discussions about work experience and live vacancies. For several residents, the sessions provided their first opportunity to speak directly with construction employers, helping to build confidence, reduce uncertainty and break down barriers to entering the sector.

Gareth, our Building Plymouth Coordinator, said: “Working closely with Building Plymouth members continues to be incredibly valuable. Their willingness to give time, share knowledge and engage directly with local residents plays a key role in strengthening Plymouth’s construction pipeline and supporting people into sustainable employment.”
