Aged 19+? Check out these January Opportunities!

EVENTS – THESE ARE A GREAT WAY TO EXPLORE THE COURSES ON OFFER IN PERSON

  • City College Plymouth is hosting an Adult Skills Open Evening on Wednesday 4 January, between 6-8pm at Kings Road in Devonport.

  • GHQ welcome all to pop into the Centre at Elizabeth Court Whimple Street every Monday to Thursday, 10-3pm to speak with trainers or see the facilities.

  • On Course South West has an Open Day on Saturday 14 January between 10.30am – 2.30pm at Hyde Park House on Mutley Plain.

  • Prince’s Trust has a Get Hired in Health & Social Care event on Tuesday 24 January at Cosmic Kitchen in Plymouth City Centre, for anyone aged 18-30 who is looking to get work in the sector. Employability sessions will also be run by Prince’s Trust staff the day before to help you prepare for interviews. To register for your place, click here.

  • Greenlight’s Apprenticeship Open Day is taking place at the Darklake, Estover premises on Saturday 28 January between 10am-3pm.

COURSES STARTING IN JANUARY – BY TRAINING PROVIDER


Achievement Training, based centrally at the top of town, has short courses starting in January including:

Argyle Community Trust, is running a six-week SCORE programme, focused on employability for those aged 16-30 and has a course starting from Monday 23 January. Hosted at Brickfields Sports Centre in Devonport, this course is on Monday to Wednesday from 9.30am to 2pm. To get involved email justin.jewell@pafc.co.uk.


City College Plymouth, based in Devonport, has lots of short or part-time courses starting in January, including:

The College is also offering free part-time skills bootcamps in:

  • green construction

  • core digital & IT skills

  • digital skills for the healthcare sector.

CTSW, based in Honicknowle has an offer for 19 to 24-year-olds who aren’t employed or in education and interested in gaining skills in bricklaying, carpentry, painting and decorating, and plastering, with their 12-day course. Eat That Frog, based on Mutley Plain has two great opportunities for anyone aged 19+ in January:

· Find That Job - a two-week course to help you explore local job opportunities. The course runs from Monday 16 – Friday 20 January from 9.30am-2.30pm

· Virtual Construction course - a five-day course covering health and safety, starting work in construction and including a CSCS test and card. It’s delivered online from Monday 23 to Friday 27 January.


GHQ, based in the city centre, from January you can sign up to:

  • short one-day courses in beauty, nails, barbering and hair costing £100-£125 with various dates throughout the year.

  • ‘Wellbeing Wednesdays’ offering half a day training in beauty, nails, barbering and hair for £50.

  • privately funded or loan funded courses and qualifications in hair, beauty, barbering, childcare, nails, beauty, management, business, admin, education and training AET, CET, IQA, CAVA at various prices

Kier Construction is hosting a Hard Hat Ready onsite training programme from Plymouth Crematorium at the Park in Plympton. The course runs from 23 January to 17 February between 9am and 4pm, offering a great chance to gain practical skills and your CSCS labourer card.


On Course South West is offering the following courses (most are FREE!) from Hyde Park House, Mutley / All Saints Academy in Honicknowle this January:

Real Ideas Organisation, based in Devonport is running a six-week Green Thinkers programme for 16-30 year olds. It runs two days a week on a Monday and Tuesday from 10am to 3pm and is based at Devonport Guildhall. Register your interest here.


Shekinah, based on Bath Street in Stonehouse, is offering the following FREE courses from the week of Monday 9 January:

  • Level 1 Award in Skills for Vocational Studies, focused on mentoring – Wednesdays, 9.30am-1pm

  • Level 2 Award in Progression, focused on mentoring – Thursdays, 9.30am-1pm

  • Entry level 3 Award in Entry to Employment, Thursdays, 9.30am-1pm with Shekinah focused on getting a job, volunteering or self-employment

  • Entry level 3 Award in Essential Digital Skills for Everyday Life, Thursdays 1.15pm-4pm

  • Re:Skill for help with problem solving, English and maths. Fridays, 9.30am – 12.30pm

  • Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment, 9.30am-4pm, Fridays

  • CSCS Practice, site visit and test

Train4All is offering a free ten-day course called Constructing Lives Together, which is focused on gaining an introduction to the construction industry and completing the CSCS card qualification.
