Winner: The Ron Simmonds Trade Apprentice of the Year 2023

Huge congratulations to David Mears, undertaking an Intermediate Level 2 in Bricklaying with Persimmon Homes Cornwall and West Devon, and City College Plymouth for winning the highly respected Ron Simmonds Construction Trade Apprentice of the Year 2023 Award.

David Mears said: “I feel very honoured to receive the Apprentice of the Year award and I’m very proud of what I have achieved so far during my apprenticeship. I thoroughly enjoy working for Persimmon Homes and I’m looking forward to developing my skills and gaining further experience, so I can become a qualified and competent tradesman.”

David’s apprenticeship journey began in January 2022 and from the start, it was evident that David had the tenacity to succeed. His employers were hugely impressed with his fantastic attitude on site and he showed a real willingness to learn techniques, and was always keen to showcase what he had learnt.

Nominated by Andy Wallis, Regional Apprenticeship Manager at Persimmon Homes said: “I’m absolutely delighted that David has been recognised as Trade Apprentice of the Year for Building Plymouth. David has worked exceptionally hard and overcome many challenges to get to this point and he should be proud of his achievements. I’m looking forward to supporting David for the remainder of his apprenticeship and future career with Persimmon Homes.”

From his nomination it was clear that David’s personal qualities and attributes would play a large part in his success. Even facing substantial personal difficulties, David’s timekeeping, attendance and commitment towards his apprenticeship was evident for all to see.

For these reasons, David has always received exceptional reviews of his progress by his tutors. It was clear that no matter what personal issues he was facing, he was fully committed to gaining a career in the industry, and was fully engaged with all elements of his apprenticeship program.

Not afraid of a challenge, David has also supported at careers events. Although out of his comfort zone, he has been able to assist with the events, helping new entrants learn more about the industry.

Since starting in January 2022 with only a very limited understanding of Bricklaying, David has developed his skills exponentially and is now a valued member of the team that he works on site with.
