A creative competition for young people across the Southwest

We’re excited to help spread the word about “Where’s Your Head At?” – a brilliant, free creative competition for children and young people aged 0 to 25 living in Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and Dorset.

If you’ve got something to say about art, emotion or the way feelings shape your world, this is a great chance to express yourself and potentially have your work displayed at The Box in Plymouth this summer!

What’s it’s all about?

The Box, in partnership with Arts University Plymouth, is inviting young artists to create an original piece of work inspired by the theme “art and emotion.”

Whether your feelings are loud and colourful or quiet and complicated, this is your opportunity to turn them into something creative and meaningful.

Entries close at 5pm on Sunday 3 May 2026.

What could you win?

Selected artists will not only see their work exhibited at The Box, but could also win:

  • £150 to spend in The Box Shop

  • A place in a special summer exhibition running alongside a major display from the Government Art Collection (20 June to 20 September 2026)

The exhibition has been shaped through conversations and workshops with teenagers and young adults from across Plymouth and will pair artworks by artists such as Alvaro Barrington, Barbara Hepworth and Alberta Whittle with honest reflections from young people aged 13–25.

What does ‘Where’s Your Head At?’ mean?

We all experience emotions differently—sometimes they’re clear, sometimes they’re confusing, and sometimes they’re hard to put into words.

This year’s theme asks you to respond to the feelings you notice in yourself or others, and then create it into an original piece of art.

What can I submit?

You can submit a work in any medium: drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, photography, digital art, sculpture, textiles, mixed media, design, illustration, or film.

Your entry just needs to be submitted digitally, so if it’s a physical artwork, you’ll need to send a high-quality photograph. All work must be original and created entirely by you and all work must be original and created entirely by you.

Who can enter?

Anyone aged 0 to 25 living in Devon, Cornwall, Somerset or Dorset can submit an entry.

There are four categories:

• Early Years (EY)

• Primary school (P)

• Secondary school (S)

• 18 to 25 years (YP)

The winners and a selection of entries from the competition will go on display at The Box from 4 July 2026 to 4 October 2026.
