Support and opportunities for young people leaving education

Young people leaving education this summer are being encouraged to make the most of a wide range of free support, advice and opportunities available through Skills Launchpad Plymouth at Cobourg House.

A programme of targeted activity is now up and running to help young people explore their next steps, to connect with employers and training providers and get tailored support.

Dedicated support across key sectors has been set up with those interested in careers in health and social care or childcare able to book Caring Plymouth education leaver appointments, running every Monday afternoon throughout July and August.

These sessions offer dedicated, one-to-one support to explore training, entry-level roles and career routes in this vital sector.

For those considering construction careers, Building Plymouth will host drop-in sessions with local employers including Classic Builders and The Plym Group to give practical guidance on apprenticeships, training and job opportunities within the sector.

A series of training and apprenticeship drop-in events will run on the first Thursday of August, September and October between 10am and 1pm to give young people the chance to meet face to face with local training providers and explore courses and opportunities. Organisations supporting these events include Achievement Training, City College Plymouth, Focus Training, On Course South West and Skills Group. 

These informal sessions are designed to help young people:

• understand their options

• speak directly to training providers

• take the next step into education, employment or apprenticeships

The next Training and Apprenticeship Drop-in Session is taking place on Thursday 6 August, from 10am to 1pm. If you are considering your next steps and want to know where to start, these sessions are a great opportunity to get advice, ask questions and explore your options.

The Careers Plymouth team will host dedicated support sessions throughout the summer. These appointment-based sessions will provide immediate support and guidance for young people reviewing their options after receiving results.

The programme reflects Skills Launchpad Plymouth’s commitment to providing personalised, joined-up support, helping young people navigate their next steps—whether that’s entering employment, continuing education, or building confidence before making a decision.

Councillor Tess Blight, Cabinet Member for Education, Skills and Apprenticeships said: “This summer is a key moment for many young people as they take their next steps. Through the Skills and Post-16 team’s collaborative approach, we’re bringing together employers, training providers and support services in one place – making it easier for young people to access the opportunities available and find the right route for them.”

Young people aged 16 to 24, including those currently claiming benefits or unsure about their next steps, are encouraged to drop in, book an appointment, or get in touch to explore the support available.

All activity is based at Skills Launchpad Plymouth on the first floor of Cobourg House, providing a central, accessible location for young people to get support.
