NCW2024 - Public Services

This week in celebration of National Careers Week 2024 we are showcasing some of Plymouth’s key sectors, and today we focus on public services.

Public services are government-offered services that help all members of the community, so Plymouth as a military city with a major naval base has lots of opportunities.

The public services can be separated into uniformed and non-uniformed services. The uniformed services

include the Army, Navy, RAF, Police, Fire, Ambulance and Prison Services.

Key roles in the uniformed services include:

  • officer

  • inspector

  • coastguard

  • dog handler

  • bodyguard.

Non-uniformed services in the community include opportunities in local government, probation and social services.

Key roles in the non-uniformed services include:

  • child protection officer

  • civil service manager

  • criminologist

  • housing policy officer

  • registrar of births, deaths, marriages and civil partnerships.

Looking to train for public services? Outside of school-based provision, there are courses from entry-level to postgraduate qualifications. City College Plymouth, Discovery College, MPTC, Plymouth Marjon University and the University of Plymouth are great places to start. You can also access this industry through apprenticeships.
