Could a career as a PCSO be right for you?

f you're interested in helping people, making a difference in your community and building a rewarding public service career, becoming a Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) could be worth exploring. Information shared during a recent recruitment awareness session highlighted future opportunities with Devon & Cornwall Police.

PCSOs are often the friendly face of policing in local communities. They work with residents, schools, businesses and partner organisations to tackle local issues, offer support and help people feel safe where they live and work.

Who can apply?

To apply, you'll need GCSE English at grade 4/C or above (or an equivalent Level 2 qualification). Applicants must also meet residency requirements and successfully complete the police vetting process.

You don't need previous policing experience. The role is designed to help you develop your skills, confidence and knowledge, with training provided as part of your employment. Successful candidates will work towards a Level 4 Community Policing Practice qualification whilst in post.

What does the application process involve?

The recruitment process includes online assessments designed to understand how you would naturally respond to different situations. These include a situational judgement test and a behavioural style questionnaire, with practice materials available to help candidates feel prepared.

Successful applicants will then complete a range of pre-employment checks, including vetting, references, medical screening and a drugs test.

Opportunities ahead

Devon & Cornwall Police expect around 13 places to be available on each future PCSO recruitment intake, making it a great opportunity for anyone considering a career in policing or community safety.

The force also offers Positive Action support, aimed at encouraging applications from under-represented groups and helping ensure policing reflects the communities it serves.
