Welcome to The Weld Space

A new business, The Weld Space has opened in Plymouth to allow people to learn basic to advance welding and metalworking skills through creative furniture-making courses.

Founded by a University of Plymouth Design Graduate and creator of RichCraft Richard Evans Furniture, The Weld Space offers the chance to learn basic to advance metalworking skills in a creative, fun and safe way - with no prior experience required.

The courses are suitable for adults and run from their fully equipped workshop at Alma Yard in Plymouth’s East End. Over the course of 3 hours or a full day, the public can learn to make a product or object from metal.

The Weld Space aims to have a Social Impact within Plymouth by providing a welding and metalworking skills

programme to 18 to 24-year-olds who are out of work or thinking about the next steps in their career. With the hope of enticing individuals with an interest in welding and fabrication to pursue a career in manufacturing - a skill set that is in demand within the Southwest.

Initial funding for The Weld Space project has come from Outset, YTKO and Andovar with most funding coming from Plymouth City Councils Social Enterprise Investment Fund and ticketed courses that are available for the public to purchase will help to fund sessions for 18-24 years olds going forward.

Richard, Founder of The Weld Space said: “I’m delighted to be able to launch The Weld Space in Plymouth after relocating back here in September 2021. Often young people have an interest in manufacturing roles but there is little chance to explore this interest and they must choose between university or an apprenticeship. Early choices like this are similar to dating - you don’t get married on a first date! The Weld Space will hopefully provide young people with an opportunity to explore welding as a career”.

The Weld Space was set up in response to a growing demand for practical skills-based activities and the DIY adult learning market and operates a short course programme that is fun, creative and skills-based with all equipment and materials provided. Participants can experience MIG, TIG and Stick welding processes in a fun and creative way.

Courses can be booked from now through to December by visiting https://theweldspace.co.uk.
