Huge congratulations to Dave Brighton who is undertaking a Higher Level 4 Construction Quantity Surveying Technician with Ian Williams and City College Plymouth, for being Highly Commended in the Building Plymouth Technical Apprentice of the Year Awards 2023.
After receiving his Highly Commended Award, Dave Brighton said: “Receiving the award was a huge surprise to me, especially in the early stage of my apprenticeship. It has helped to give me the confidence and belief that my efforts are talking me in the right direction. To change career paths and commit to an apprenticeship in an industry which I had no experience of and knew very little about was a big decision. My employer Ian Williams Ltd give me an huge amount of support in my development, their apprentice programme is both challenging and enjoyable with a clearly defined framework giving objectives to be achieved at set intervals. The Plymouth office team which I am now a part of is very strong with a wealth of experience and knowledge that they are happy to share with me as I develop my skills. The combination of, on the job training and the really well structured HNC qualification, that I am studying at City College Plymouth will give me the tools I need to be a successful Quantity Surveyor."
In his first three months, Dave has already shown huge potential. Although new to the industry, he has made a positive impact with Ian Williams, tendering for, and securing new business, managing a key client contract and reducing contract retention.
Clinton Brewer, Business Manager at Ian Williams said: “Dave is always keen to get involved with projects and always asks questions. I have been particularly impressed that he will often make suggestions for the team’s consideration, in order to achieve improvements, or efficiencies in the business.”
At work, Dave shows a strong determination to make sure that his work is accurate. He shows a great awareness of the business and has been proactive in wanting to learn more.
Although Dave is new to the industry, at college he is keen to engage in conversations which are helpful, not just to him, but his peers too. He has shown a great ability to ask relevant questions and works well with his college peers. His 100% attendance proves his commitment to the course itself, and his passion for progressing in the industry.
