Virtual Jobs Fair

The National Careers Service is hosting a Virtual Jobs Fair campaign covering the South-West region on Monday 16 November 2020, 1pm to 4pm.


As well as promoting vacancies, careers advisers will be delivering webinars and workshops, giving careers advice and guidance to help jobseekers make successful applications by helping improve their CVs and to prepare for interviews.

Get Started in Care 

Are you aged 16-30? Not in education, employment, or training? The Prince’s Trust, in partnership with a range of employers in the Devon area (Plymouth, Exeter and Torbay), are offering a FREE online employment course, giving you a fantastic opportunity to start a career in Social Care. You can expect:

  • An introduction to working in Health and Social Care, with an insight to the roles and responsibilities you can expect 

  • Learning the values, skills, and attitudes required for a job in the sector

  • Tailored CV support and interview advice

  • Speed interviews with employers recruiting for entry-level vacancies 

  • Up to 6 months of mentoring support

Sector-based Work Academy Programme for Babcock Apprenticeships

Open to all ages, JCP Plymouth is hosting a virtual event for claimants on Wednesday 18 November, 11am to 1pm to learn more about the Apprenticeships that Babcock are being advertised for the intake of September 2021. Yes it seems a long time away but these are prestigious opportunities and the application process does take some time so why not get ahead of the game and gain an insight into how to apply and what you can expect from one of the largest employers in Plymouth.


To see all the vacancies on offer please see the Babcock website and access the Careers section then Apprenticeships, then search Apprenticeships. There are a variety of opportunities on offer from Mechanical Engineering to Fabricating and Business Admin.


The Business Admin roles will be both at Entry level (after GCSE) and Higher Level (after A Level).  


As part of the event, a representative from the Early Careers Department, will be delivering a presentation including:

  • a virtual tour of Babcock

  • what jobs are available

  • what it is like to work for Babcock with input from actual apprentices and managers from various departments from the Trades to Business Admin

  • the actual recruitment process

Free taster courses with City College Plymouth 

City College Plymouth is pleased to announce a range of short courses for young people aged 16 to 18 not in education, employment or training. If you are unsure of the direction you want your life to take, you can try out a subject before making it your ultimate career goal. 

The FREE taster courses (which vary in length) are in the following areas:

  • construction 

  • hair and beauty 

  • science

  • film-making

  • photography

  • employability skills. 

These part-time courses all serve as good introductions to these sectors and could provide the knowledge and insight to prepare you for a traineeship, full-time course or Apprenticeship.

Google Digital Garage webinars in partnership with Jobcentre Plus Mentoring Circles 

Jobcentre Plus has teamed up with Google Digital Garage to offer two online Mentoring Circle webinars: 

  • Webinar 1 - Find My Career Goals, Tuesday 17th November 11am-12pm 

What will I learn? Create career goals and a first steps action plan, including: finding out what motivates you, learning how to find a job that suits you, being resilient and motivated, and creating your own plan. 

  • Webinar 2 - Build My CV and Cover Letter, Thursday 19th November 11am – 12pm 

What will I learn? Discover what makes a great CV and cover letter, including:  quick tips on how to make your application shine, identifying your strengths and skills, and standing out from the crowd.
Who is it for? This course is designed for anyone looking for their first job, for those looking to work in a new sector and for those looking to change career. Each webinar is delivered by an expert Google Digital Garage trainer via YouTube Live. During the webinar you can interact and ask questions via the instant chat facility.

Virtual Work Experience for 18-25 years Claimants 

IGD – Feeding Britain’s Future is launching a Virtual work experience week w/c 9 November for 18-25 year old customers. The IGD Work Experience Week will help young people develop their skills through masterclasses supported by industry professionals and by undertaking an independent project. It’s a great opportunity to include on their CV as an example of gaining skills and experience for future applications/interviews.  It is an industry-wide programme so they will benefit from interacting with professionals from a wide range of companies, and developing their understanding of job opportunities and skills shortages, in an industry that is actively recruiting despite the current climate.

Prince’s Trust hosts Team Programme 

Prince’s Trust has announced the dates for their future Teams Programme in 2020/21:
23 November 2020, 11 January 2021, 15 February 2021, 22 March 2021 and 26 April 2021 


If you’re unemployed and between 16 and 25, you can meet new people, gain new skills and train on this 12-week Team programme:

  • Take on your own group community project, making a positive difference to the place where you live

  • Take part in an action-packed residential trip

  • Get two weeks’ work experience in something you’re interested in

  • Develop your English and Maths skills

Get your Future on-track with Discovery College, part of YMCA Plymouth 

Aimed at 16-19 year olds, #FUTURES is about getting your future on-track with the skills and support you need. #FUTURES is a different kind of programme, combining practical tasks with fun workshops, aimed at getting you skilled and ready to take that next step.

#FUTURES isn’t just another dull employability programme. This FREE 10 week course will give you the skills you need while having a great time. The programme runs 3 days a week with Monday at the scenic Lopwell Barn where you will take part in team activities, business skills workshops and learn practical skills. Transport is provided to The Barn on a Monday and a minibus will leave and return from Discovery College. On a Thursday and Friday you will be at Discovery College improving your employability skills that will help you land that job or place in further/higher education.

Get Started with Photography 

Covering everything from photography to fashion – the Prince’s Trust Get Started programme gives a young person (aged 16-25 years) the opportunity to engage in fun activities and meet new friends over a week long programme. All whilst building their confidence and team working skills.

Seadream Education CIC announce funded experiential learning project 

Seadream Education CIC is delighted to announce that our experiential learning project has secured funding from the European Social Fund to benefit people aged 16+ that are connected to Plymouth and are currently not in employment, education or training. 
Seadream activities are designed and delivered by enthusiastic professionals and have elements of environmental stewardship; scientific enquiry; discovery and exploration; ocean literacy; personal development; confidence building, and, employability and teamwork skills. We will encourage making connections between opportunities and skill sets in multiple sectors such as science, engineering, business, arts, caring professions, media, marketing and much more. 
We will take project participants on professionally planned and guided trips to local venues, revealing opportunities to the many varied, exciting, rewarding and above all achievable life learning, career opportunities, link learning to real-life challenges, and, raise aspirations. 

Activities will be tailored to suite academic ability, interests, physical ability and setting, providing ample opportunities to stretch the more able individual whilst nurturing the less confident.  
This project is fully funded. All activities and resources will be free of charge to all project participants aged 16 plus that are not in education, training or employment.  This is a new and exciting style of project that is based on informal experiential learning.

Plymouth Startup Weekend is back with a twist!  


Led by the University of Plymouth and part of the Techstars Startup Weekend movement, it is the place to meet like-minded individuals and be immersed in a weekend of creativity and collaboration ONLINE.

This virtual edition of Techstars Startup Weekend Plymouth is focused on supporting and growing our entrepreneurial community in and around Plymouth. The 54-hour event has a new format, but the inspiration, energy and educational opportunities for entrepreneurs is as strong as ever.

City College Plymouth hosting its first Online Open Week

City College Plymouth is to host its first Online Open Week from Monday 19 October to Saturday 24 October. 

Coinciding with Colleges Week, the virtual event will take a look at different subject areas each day, building up to a large ‘Access All Areas’ event on Saturday. Open to prospective students of all ages, the online content will take you through the different courses offered at the College, and participants can hear from lecturers, current students, alumni and employers linked to that particular industry. Brand-new video footage and 360 photo technology will give participants the chance to tour the College’s state-of-the-art facilities without having to leave the sofa. 


Content will be available between 8am and 8pm each day. A series of helpful video topics such as funding, learning support, English and maths and a message from the College’s Principal will be available all week.


As the content is password protected, those wishing to access this content will need to register via Saturday’s Access All Areas event will enable prospective students to speak to support teams live via the College’s web chat facility. 


Whether you’re a 15 to 18-year-old considering a full-time course or an Apprenticeship; someone thinking about progressing onto a university-level course or returning to learning via our part-time provision for adults, there is guaranteed to be something for everyone.

Barista Sector-Based Work Academy Programme

City College Plymouth are hosting a week long Barista Course starting on Monday 26 October, finishing on Friday 30 October, 9am to 3pm.


It will take place at Picquet Barracks and City College Kings Road. Social Distancing will be observed.


This is a great opportunity to gain an understanding of what life as a Barista looks like and to gain a City & Guilds Level 1 Employability Certificate to state Barista Course completed. Due to social distancing guidelines the programme will not include Front Of House duties.

Expansion of Free Accredited Learning Qualifications from Plymouth’s Adult Education Provider, On Course South West 

On Course South West, part of Plymouth City Council, has increased the number of learning options available free of charge for adult learners in Plymouth and surrounding areas this Autumn to  include an additional 40 accredited learning qualifications.  


This means that adult learners can work towards nationally recognised qualifications at no cost, developing skills and knowledge that will help them achieve both personal and professional development goals.  Free qualifications are now available in a range of subjects including health & social care, business & industry skills and other essential work-place skills, such as data protection, safeguarding and environmental awareness.  Free courses in digital skills, health and wellbeing, creative skills and foreign languages are also still available.


Accredited qualifications are delivered online with an approach that is designed to fit around other work and personal commitments:  learners study at their own pace and have up to 20 weeks to complete their qualification, with the support of a fully qualified assessor.  On completion, learners achieve a level 2 qualification, recognised by employers nationally.

Free Courses Transforms Access to Learning for Adults across Plymouth 

Plymouth’s leading adult education provider, On Course South West - part of Plymouth City Council, is offering more than 50 courses completely free for adult learners in Plymouth and surrounding areas this Autumn.  


As a major boost for adults who want to achieve personal goals, support their wellbeing or develop confidence and abilities in both their personal and working lives, people aged 19 and over can now sign up for a huge range of subjects, completely free of charge. In total, 55 course options are available, including courses covering digital skills, health and wellbeing, creative skills and foreign languages.  


These courses are delivered online through learning platforms that have been used successfully by On Course South West tutors and learners since March.
